THE NEED IS GREAT

The Hard Truth

  • There are more than 100 homeless people just in Kent and Ravenna.

  • Many live under bridges, behind stores and strip malls or along bike paths and near public parks.

  • Portage County's only overnight homeless shelter, Miller Community House, can currently house 22 individuals. There are generally 30-45 people on the waiting list.

  • 208 people are on benefits as "homeless" in Portage county.

Statistics used come from the U.S. Census Bureau – specifically the decennial censuses, the annual Current Population Surveys, the American Community Survey (which replaced the social and economic survey questions from the decennial census), and the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates program.
