Haven on Track to House Homeless

There are 22 beds in Portage County to serve the area’s homeless. As temperatures grow colder, The Haven grows closer to starting renovations on the 10,000-square-foot, Route 59 building it plans to turn into a 60-plus bed facility to shelter even more. The new facility would feature separate men’s and women’s sleeping quarters and showers as well as two family sleeping rooms with a common day room. In addition to a common kitchen and dining area for all who stay at the shelter, there will be a laundry area as well as the offices for The Haven, a check-in area and a waiting room/drop-in area.

The laundry and showers from the ROC, a ministry founded by Portage Community Chapel, will move to the Haven.

Mother to the Homeless

Anne Marie Noble grew up in a poor family. Her father died when she was 5, leaving her and her mother to live on Social Security.

Her mother instilled a strong work ethic in her, and by 10 Noble had her first job working at a clergy house making a dollar an hour. Noble’s passion for helping others came at an early age. When she was 16, she volunteered as a candy striper.
“One thing my mom instilled in me is you can always help someone else,” Noble said. “There’s always someone else that’s going to be worse off than you are.”

Work Starts on The Haven of Portage County

Thank you to everyone who came to the Haven of Portage County work day in July! Our goal was to have an event that drew not just our church but volunteers from all the churches and organizations who have prayed and are committed to helping the homeless and trafficked in Portage County. The day was a success not just in light of the tremendous amount of work accomplished:  scraping exterior paint, removing old flooring and drywall, painting and putting fresh primer on interior walls inside, and clearing the back lot by cutting trees and brush.  By far, the greater success was in just getting started on the facility in a tangible way and working alongside everyone who also has a passion to provide help in Jesus’ name.
